What World Cancer Day is About

This past year more than ever, we have learned what it means to come together, speak out, face the unknown, and support one another. Today, on World Cancer Day, we ask you to do this once more. This day is about bringing AWARENESS to PREVENTION, DETECTION, and TREATMENT.

This year the theme behind World Cancer Day is “I am and I will”. This powerful statement declares who you are and what you’re going to do and we encourage you to join in the #IAmAndIWill campaign.

My Brother’s Story

My name is Katie Mayland. I am a Digital Specialist here at 8bitstudio and have been in charge of writing most of these recent blog posts. This day holds special meaning to me and my family so I wanted to take some time and write something more personal for it.

About 4 years ago, at just 5 years old, my youngest brother was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It really is an indescribable feeling to get that news and to this day, still seems surreal.

I remember every little detail of the day we got the news. I can remember where I was, how it happened, who I talked to, and what I was thinking. Most of all, I remember the fear, the questions, and the uncertainty like it was yesterday.

This 5 year old boy quickly became my role model. Going through things that no child should ever have to go through, and doing it all with a huge smile on his face and the same goofy attitude he’s always had. His diagnosis truly changed my family forever. For 3 ½ years I watched my brother fight off this awful disease and thankfully he was victorious.

How Things Have Changed

Not all days were easy, but every day spent fighting alongside my brother was worth it. I learned so much from this little boy and our family’s experience with cancer. My priorities in life have forever changed. I no longer take time with loved ones for granted. I no longer stress about the small stuff. I’ve learned what real perseverance looks like.

Looking back, I still remember the fear and uncertainty, but I no longer feel it. Today, I only feel strength, pride, and love for my brave little brother. My now 9 year old little brother is HEALTHY and continues to take on life with a big smile and goofy attitude.

Let’s Make a Difference

I AM Katie Mayland and I WILL fight for a cancer-free world for my brother.

Please take some time out of your day to learn more about World Cancer Day and how you can participate and join the #IAmAndIWill campaign on social media. Let’s make a difference!
