2021 Web Design Trends

2021 website trends are getting us excited! After the year we’ve had, seeing new and unique trends develop jumpstarts our design motivation for the coming year. From retro and grainy, muted colors, to surrealism, AR, VR, and 3D experiences the inspirations and possibilities are endless. Let’s take a closer look at some of the trends we’re seeing and expect to see a lot more of in 2021.

Fonts

This season we are seeing a huge comeback of classic and retro styled fonts. When you think about it, it makes sense that retro and classic fonts are coming back to the forefront of design. Clothing trends have been seeing the same retro trends emerge again.

This year has had a lot of us questioning what the future will hold, and being nostalgic of past years. Taking time and looking through old things brings back memories and feelings of a different time. This nostalgic feeling has, in turn, developed into trends!

Imagery

When it comes to imagery we’ve been seeing more interesting 2021 trends. Similar to the surge of retro fonts, we’ve been seeing imagery heading in the same direction. Colorful, grainy, collages of images and illustrations have been picking up traction and this style definitely compliments the retro vibes.

We have also been seeing a lot of abstract psychedelia,  surrealism, and bright colored pop art. These styles really capture the artistic nature and provide a much more interesting experience for viewers versus traditional photography.

Visuals

Visuals on the other hand seem to be divided. We are seeing quite a bit of retro, textured illustrations. However, we are also seeing a huge surge in the use of AR, VR, 3D, and Gaussian Blur in animations, illustrations, and depictions.

The shopping experience has seen huge changes in the past few years, and even more so since the beginning of COVID-19. This shift has forced businesses to reimagine the experience. The result is a steep upward trend in the use of VR and AR to provide users with a shopping experience that, although different, feels familiar to them.

Colors

Similar to visuals, we see quite a big split in color trends. While some companies are diving towards light and muted colors, others are choosing to capture bright colors, negative colors, and dark mode colors.

The introduction of dark mode has had a large impact on the use of colors on websites and apps and will continue to trend into 2021. We will be seeing more use of black tones, accent colors, and negative colors. These bold color schemes can definitely be eye catching, yet also be more dynamic working with dark mode as it gains popularity.

On the other hand, many of these colors we are seeing in 2021 trends, again, relate back to that retro feel. Bright colors are being worn down and muted colors are used to give off this retro effect.

With both the darker colors and retro vibes we have been seeing a lot more pink. Check out this article that goes more in depth on these colors and color schemes.

Design

Be prepared in 2021 for some envelope pushing designs. From scrollytelling, horizontal scrolling, scrolling cards, and more 2021 will be filled with unique designs. Many of these designs revolve around concepts such as dark mode, minimalism, or that retro vibe.
