About Glencoe Regional Health

Rooted in the community since 1941, Glencoe Regional Health (GRH) is an independent not-for-profit health care system based in Glencoe, MN. GRH has additional locations in Lester Prairie and Stewart and provides healthcare to the greater Central Minnesota area. Their mission is to provide high-quality, accessible healthcare close to home, and they treat everyone from expectant mothers to the retirement community. Their motto: “We care for you like family.”

Deliverables

GRH came to us with the goal of updating a very robust and large website. Some of their pain points included not being able to easily update and manage their content, information not being easily accessible and an outdated look that didn’t represent the organization as best they could. Unfortunately, as sites age and content is continually added, it becomes necessary to do some spring cleaning. That’s where we come in.

The site needed a little help with navigation, page hierarchy and updated accessibility practices. Keeping usability in mind — both for the client and the site user — we set to work on a more friendly, updated website build. By reconstructing the site architecture we were able to optimize for SEO and create an enhanced user experience.

Starting Point

Just as healthcare technology is constantly being upgraded to improve patient outcomes, hospital websites need to be upgraded to improve the digital patient experience. GRH’s original site was functional and provided lots of information, but we discovered we could improve the user flow by cleaning up navigation, simplifying design and introducing some helpful new tools

Focal Points & Features

Find Care Web App

Web design is trending in the direction of quick usability. Visitors come to a website to find information fast and they need a clean, easy interface to navigate. We created a robust search feature that references the website and provides related specialties and providers. Additionally, we designed a visual interface that allows users to browse a variety of care options, services and providers. We also implemented filters for providers, which allow users to search for a provider that meets their preferences.

Assistant Tab

Healthcare websites can be intimidating. Some users might not want to navigate all over the place to find where they can search for a provider, schedule an appointment or look for services. We integrated a side tab “assistant” to help users find quick actions right away on the page.

Upgraded News & Events

One of the ways Glencoe Regional Health best connects to the community is through their blog. We redesigned and integrated a new look for the News & Events page, including some fun hover animation effects.

Living Centers

In addition to its clinic and hospital network, Glencoe Regional Health also has two living center facilities. GlenFields Living with Care is 108-bed skilled nursing facility and Orchard Estates is a 40-unit senior living community, both on the main Glencoe campus. As these living centers are an important part of their network, we dedicated a page and sub-navigation system to each to highlight the services, amenities and facilities.

Testimonials

Testimonials and reviews are essential for a website because they help establish trust and authority. We really wanted to highlight GRH’s dedication to the community and its employees by integrating visually appealing (and easy to update) testimonial technology. In addition, we integrated reviews and ratings on individual provider profiles.

Provider Bios

Patients often seek specific providers based on their needs and preferences, so building detailed provider profiles allows patients to make informed decisions. Our Find Care app is integrated with search filters including areas of care, languages spoken and gender. The bios allow patients to gain insight into each individual, fostering a sense of familiarity before their appointment. We spruced up this part of the site and made it a little more user-friendly for potential patients.

Organic SEO

Challenges

GRH’s redesign introduced several SEO challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was the lack of clear hierarchy and organization in their existing site architecture, particularly around their extensive content for services, specialties, and providers. During the strategy phase, our team collaborated with GRH to restructure this framework, establishing a clearer parent/child hierarchy. Previously, much of their internal linking relied heavily on hyperlinks buried in body content, making navigation cumbersome.

By overhauling the sitemap and URL slugs, we also had to carefully manage redirects for indexed pages to preserve SEO value. Another challenge was the inconsistent use of heading structures across their content, which impacted readability and accessibility. Finally, with GRH’s rebrand, they opted to launch under a new primary domain, adding another layer of complexity to the transition and requiring meticulous planning to maintain search visibility and ensure a seamless user experience.

How We Addressed These Challenges

To address GRH’s website challenges, we restructured their site architecture. By implementing intuitive sub-navigation, users can now efficiently access related services, specialties, and provider information without relying on buried hyperlinks.

Our Organic SEO service played a crucial role in managing the transition, ensuring URL structure changes were handled with precision. We implemented a strategic redirect plan to maintain search visibility while also refining content organization with proper heading structures to improve readability and accessibility.

With GRH’s rebrand and domain transition, we proactively guided them through the potential short-term SEO impacts, developing a strategy to mitigate risks and maintain search rankings. Since launch, we have closely monitored performance, and early indicators show positive trends. Thanks to a well-executed foundation—carefully managed redirects, enhanced architecture, and content optimizations—the site is not only stabilizing but is on track to surpass previous performance benchmarks.

This project, among our largest to date, provided invaluable insights into patient interaction with medical websites and refined our ability to address complex website issues for our client. Through this process we delivered a more modern, accessible and user-friendly website that meets the needs of both client and community.
